A Course for Adolescents - Mapping out a Life Worth Living

WHAT IS THE COURSE ABOUT?
As a new generation emerges we hope to equip it with the inner resources to understand, respect and nurture relationships. By mapping out their future, we hope they will gain a far reaching perspective on what effect the choices they make today will have over the course of their lives.

Relationships for life.
o How do they work?
o How can you tell a good relationship from a bad one?
o Building different kinds of relationship.
o Destroying relationships and ourselves.
o Relating to God

Building identity.
o Who am I within the group and outside of it?
o Choosing a peer group

Emotions.
o What are they and how do I manage them?

Friendship is fundamental.
o Am I a good friend?o How do I become one?

Love.
o What is it?

Differences.
o Invitation to growth or conflict?
o Managing and appreciating uniqueness.

Sexuality.
o A life force or loose change?
o Inadequacy of sexual education as “use a condom”.

Dealing with our Pain.

Marriage.
o What is it and do we need it?

Mapping my life journey.
o My relationships, my sexuality, my life, my career

HOW DOES THE COURSE WORK?
Life Maps is held for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 20 for both boys and girls, preferably in mixed groups.The Course is run over 90 minutes at a regular time each week for 8 to 10 weeks, or for as long as is needed to cover the material. It is held at schools or youth groups in the Western Cape.

Techniques used
The best way to learn something is when it goes Aha! inside you. We therefore create an experiential learning platform that involves role play, testimonies, group discussions and individual exercises.

Teachers Involvement
It is recommended that teachers attend the course to be involved with the learners and to help facilitate group work. Training is also available for teachers for long-term facilitation of the material.

A manual is being produced to teach this course. Our hope is that trained teachers and facilitators can use it to teach Life Maps in schools.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The cost is negotiated according to the school’s budget.
